Velká skálaVelká skála (Big Rock) lies near the southeastern border of the residential area of Bohnice. This hill is formed by the hardest rocks of the Prague area - cherts. The rocks formed at the bottom of a Proterozoic sea that covered most of Bohemia more than 640 million years ago.  The main components of cherts are microscopic skeletons of primitive single-celled organisms that represent the oldest known relics of life found on the territory of Prague.
In the 19th century, the slopes of Big Rock were covered by spare oaks, hawthorns, and hornbeams. These were cut down over time and replaced with the locust tree imported to Europe from North America, which crowded out the last remnants of thermophilic species growing here. Today locust trees are replaced with the original species again in this protected area. |
